Vladimír Véla, Zdeněk Trs – Embodied Visions
Zdeněk Trs (born 1985, Liberec) studied in two studios: first in the glass studio led by Vladimír Kopecký (Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design in Prague — UMPRUM, 2004–2007), and later in the painting studio of Zdeněk Beran (Academy of Fine Arts in Prague — AVU, 2007–2010). His approach to painting is the outcome of a disciplined, constructive method grounded in careful observation of the natural world, its particularities and mechanisms, and in a desire to understand them. From the outset he has been fascinated by transitional states, significant in their instability: the tension between flow and its annihilation, between light and shadow, edge and passage — phenomena for which not only data but, above all, their correct interpretation is key. Hence his characteristic emphasis on luminosity, on the complex construction of a situation through light, and on a tangible interest in surface and material quality — in (muscular) structure and (skeletal) system. His fascination with the multitude of facets and possibilities gradually led him along the proverbial path of reduction and a focus on a specific domain, or more precisely, on a particular effect. At its most mature stage these two directions converge: in reflection upon proportion and relation.
