Jiří Suchánek

Bio

Jiří Suchánek (1979) is sound and transmedia artist focused on creating permanent sound/light installations, objects and systems that are usually interactive and placed in a natural or public spaces (like a cave, astronomic observatory, bridge...). His artistic approach is synthetic. In his compositions he is connecting sound, light, sculptural objects, electronics + code with carefully chosen spaces. Through his work he explores relationship between nature, technology and durability of the electronic media in a wild climatic situations. Jiří Suchánek is usually searching for alternative situations and places for presentation of media art. The centre of his focus is sound that is expanded or articulated by other media and unexpected social situations. For installations he composes music and constructs hardware/software solutions. Jiří Suchánek studied atelier video-multimedia-performance at Faculty of Fine Arts at Brno University of Technology (1999-2005) and finished doctoral thesis Sonification in music composition and sound art at Janáček Academy of Music and Performing Arts (2015-2021).

Among other things, he received the Excellence in sound art @ sound design award at the prestigious international conference klingt gut! Symposium on Sound in Hamburg 2018 for his project "Atom tone" sonifying Mendeleev's periodic table of elements and spectral lines of atoms. He realized a large number of long-term multimedia installations in public spaces, exhibited and performed concerts and audiovisual performances at a number of international festivals, galleries and conferences such as: CTM, UNSOUND, TODAYS ART, ICAD, NEXT, NCCA, STIMUL, ENH, NIME, klingt gut! STEIM, Institute of Sonology. MagicCarpets, BAO etc. He teaches subjects dealing with sound art, sound production and audio technologies at FaVU and JAMU. In 2020, he founded the association SVITAVA – transmedia art lab and established SONDA – festival of electroacoustic music and audiovisual performances. His dream is to create an electronic installation in the mountains that will function independently for at least 500 years and be completely overgrown with lichen.
